  2. Enter your height in centimeters (cm)
  3. Click "Calculate BMI" to see your result
  4. Review your BMI category and what it means

Obesity

BMI 30.0 or higher

Important Information

  • Not a complete health assessment: BMI doesn't measure body fat directly or account for muscle mass
  • Age and gender: BMI interpretation may vary by age and gender
  • Athletes: Muscular individuals may have high BMI despite being healthy
  • Elderly: BMI may underestimate health risks in older adults
  • Ethnicity considerations: Different ethnic groups may have different BMI thresholds for health risks
  • Consult healthcare provider: Always discuss weight concerns with a medical professional

Ethnicity and BMI

Research shows that different ethnic groups may have different BMI thresholds for health risks. This calculator accounts for these differences:

Asian & South Asian Populations

  • Overweight: BMI 23+ (vs. 25+ for general population)
  • Obese: BMI 27.5+ (vs. 30+ for general population)
  • Reason: Higher risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMI levels

Other Ethnic Groups

  • Pacific Islander: May have different body composition
  • African: May have different body composition
  • Hispanic: May have different body composition
  • Middle Eastern: May have different body composition
  • Note: Standard BMI ranges apply, but individual factors should be considered

Important: These adjustments are based on population studies and may not apply to every individual. Always consult with healthcare professionals for personalized advice.

BMI Formula

The BMI calculation uses this simple formula:

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²

For example: A person weighing 70 kg and 1.75 m tall would have a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9

Health Implications

  • Underweight: May indicate malnutrition, eating disorders, or other health conditions
  • Normal weight: Associated with lower risk of weight-related health problems
  • Overweight/Obesity: Increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other conditions
  • Regular monitoring: Track your BMI over time to monitor weight changes
